Nina Simone (February 21st, 1933 - April 21st 2003) was an American musician, who also became known for her civil rights activism. Whilst refusing to be categorised herself, she is mostly recognised as a jazz singer and pianist, although she did cover a wide variety of musical styles including soul, blues, folk, and classical, amongst others. Her music continues to be extremely influential, and has been appropriated by a huge amount of people, from hip-hop artists such as Mos Def, rock icons such as John Lennon and Jeff Buckley, to TV programmes and films. Her most well known tracks were "I Put A Spell On You", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", and "Sinnerman".
